FERC says UP customers are paying too much to keep PIPP open

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has landed on the side of U.P. customers when it comes to how much they have to pay to keep the Presque Isle Power Plant in Marquette running.

The plant is owned by Wisconsin Electric Corporation. The company has been collecting $24 million from utility customers to keep the plant operational in order to meet federally mandated reliability standards. FERC issued a ruling Thursday that said the $24 million amount was not just or reasonable, and that the company had altered the date of an invoice in calculating the payment.

The ruling represents a nearly 50-percent reduction in WEC’s costs to run the plant.

The Midcontinent Independent System Operator has 45 days to make a recommendation to FERC on how much money—if any—should be refunded.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
