FEMA likely to give less money than needed, Houghton County official says

HOUGHTON, MI--   Cleanup of flood damage in Houghton County continues, and officials say help is still needed.

County Administrator Eric Forsberg says last week’s heavy rains produced 18 new washouts that had to be repaired. He says with total damage estimated at $100 million officials are hoping that the region will be declared a disaster area and FEMA will send money, but Forsberg says the county likely won’t get as much as it really needs.

“FEMA will only fund 75 percent of that, and when they came in they looked at all the entities’ estimates of damage assessment and they did their best to try and knock that down,” he says.

Forsberg says response to community need has been overwhelming, but the county still needs volunteers.

“They still have over 100 job requests on their board, so we would definitely request that people get out and help if they’re able to.”

Assistance for residents is available through the Portage Health Foundation and other agencies. For more information, dial 211.
