Federal funding aimed at helping U.P. students graduate from college

MARQUETTE, MI--   Five Upper Peninsula colleges are getting $1.3 million in federal funding to help students graduate. 

The money through the Department of Education’s TRIO Student Support Services Program aims to help first-generation college students, low-income individuals, and students with disabilities. 

Northern Michigan University will receive $300,249; Gogebic Community College, $247,580; Finlandia University is getting $286,598; Bay de Noc Community College, $292,362; and Bay Mills Community College will receive $247,583.

The money will be used for tutoring, financial aid counseling, and other support services. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
