Evans pleads to embezzlement

ESCANABA, MI--   A former city councilman and mayor of Escanaba has pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges.  

Leo Evans, 58, of Escanaba was arrested June 16 following a three-month investigation into the misuse of funds from the Escanaba Eagles Club from 2011 to 2014.  He resigned from the city council in April.

Evans was originally charged with embezzlement of $100,000 or more, but pleaded to embezzlement between $50,000 $100,000 in Escanaba Circuit Court Monday.  The charge is punishable by up to five years in prison. 

Evans is scheduled to be sentenced September 11. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
