Escapee from Newberry prison recaptured

NEWBERRY, MI--   A prisoner from the Newberry Correctional Facility has been recaptured after a brief, early-morning escape.

Officials with the Michigan Department of Corrections say Alize Montague, 19, was seen climbing over the facility’s fence just after 2 a.m. Tuesday.  He was pursued by officers who saw him cross M-123 on foot.  Michigan State Police and the DOC’s Emergency Response Team assisted in the search, along with local law enforcement.

Montague was found just before 4 a.m. about a mile from the prison and taken back into custody.

He was serving a five- to ten-year sentence out of Monroe County on charges of malicious destruction of personal property, resisting and obstructing an officer, and assault by strangulation or suffocation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
