Escanaba may put proposal before voters again

ESCANABA, MI--   Escanaba school officials may put a sinking fund millage that failed this month on the November ballot.

Superintendent Coby Fletcher says the $1.2 million measure would have been used to address three priority areas. Officials wanted to secure entrances to all buildings to make them safer. Fletcher says they also wanted to improve technology infrastructure with a goal of providing every student a device, and school facilities themselves—like roofs and boilers—need to be upgraded.

“These funds aren’t really a luxury for us,” he says. “It’s more of a necessity. The State of Michigan is not funding schools adequately. I think we’ve got several studies—one of which came from the State of Michigan itself—that shows that funding is inadequate for schools.”

Fletcher says the school board continues to discuss the issue. Some adjustments may be made to the proposal, and the board may try it again in November.
