Eastern U.P. couple arrested for sexually abusing adult

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Two Chippewa County residents have been charged in connection with the abuse of a vulnerable adult.

The Sheriff’s Office says James Shaul, 35, and Melissa Greiser, 30—both of Drummond Island—were arraigned last week for the August 18 incident.  Shaul is charged with first-degree vulnerable adult abuse, second-degree criminal sexual conduct, and kidnapping with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct.  He’s also charged with being an habitual offender-4th offense.  Greiser is charged with first-degree vulnerable adult abuse.

Undersheriff Michael Bitnar says the victim has very limited mobility.  He expects several more charges against one or both of the suspects.

Shaul is being held without bond at the Chippewa County Jail.  Greiser’s bond was set at 10 percent of $20,000 and she has to wear a tether.

A preliminary exam is set for Thursday.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
