Duo rescued from Delta County ice floe

DELTA COUNTY, MI--   Two people were rescued from Lake Michigan in Delta County after ice they were standing on became dislodged.

Tuesday around 11:25 a.m. the Delta County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to an area of ice near Portage Point.  Two individuals were stranded on an ice floe that had broken away after an icebreaker went through the area.  They found themselves surrounded by several hundred yards of open water.

Delta County Search and Rescue and Snowmobile Patrol responded, along with the Ensign Fire Department and Gladstone Public Safety with its hovercraft.  The stranded people were ultimately rescued by the hovercraft, brought back to good ice, then taken to Escanaba.

No injuries were reported.
