MARQUETTE, MI-- The City of Marquette has approved a memorandum of understanding with Duke LifePoint to build the new Marquette General Hospital at the old Roundhouse property.
The City Commission held a special meeting Monday to consider the plan, which includes the construction of a 279-bed facility on 37 acres of land between Baraga and Washington streets. The project also includes the parcel of land currently used for the city’s Municipal Service Center.
DLP is looking to pay $4 million for the land, but wants be reimbursed through Brownfield Redevelopment. That includes realignment of Baraga Avenue to tie into Spring Street; a new bridge from Grove Street over US-41; and construction of a roundabout to the new facility off of the highway.
Hospital officials also want a 50-percent abatement on real property taxes for the next 12 years.
The new project is expected to cost about $280 million.
Duke LifePoint wants to break ground on the new hospital in 2015.
