Downstate Trooper shot and killed

HART, MI (AP)--   Authorities say a state trooper was fatally shot during a traffic stop in western Michigan.

Trooper Paul Butterfield stopped a vehicle in Mason County's Sherman Township at 6:20 p.m. Monday.

Three minutes later a motorist called 911 saying a trooper had been shot in the head. Butterfield died during emergency surgery.

Sherman Township is 80 miles north of Grand Rapids.

A vehicle later was found based on information Butterfield had called in. Police located two suspects at a gas station around 8:30 p.m. Police and the suspects exchanged gunfire and one suspect was shot.

A man and woman were taken into custody. The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gov. Rick Snyder says Butterfield's death is a "grim reminder" of the dangers involved in protecting the public.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
