Downstate man dies in Gogebic County drowning

A downstate man is dead of an apparent drowning in Gogebic County. Sheriff’s deputies were notified Sunday evening at about 7:30 of a group of campers swimming near a canoe landing on East Bear Lake when one of the swimmers could not be located.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with officers of the Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police… Michigan State Police… and Michigan Department of Natural Resources searched until dark. The search resumed Monday morning with additional assistance from the U.S. Forest Service.

The body of 24-year-old Sang-Mook Yoon, of Grand Rapids, was recovered East Bear Lake shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday.

The incident is still under investigation by the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department.
