Door County man leaves loaded gun at park

EGG HARBOR, WI (AP)--   The Door County Sheriff's Department has reopened a case involving a man who left a loaded gun at Egg Harbor Fun Park after learning his wife had been involved in a similar incident.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports 76-year-old Gerald Hitchler of Oconomowoc wasn't initially charged because he has a concealed carry permit. But police say they want prosecutors to review the incident after they learned his wife also left her loaded gun in a bathroom.

Susan Hitchler was charged with negligently handling a weapon, but the case was dismissed. Her lawyer argued that no one was endangered after she left her gun in a women's restroom at Elmbrook Church earlier this year.

Nik Clark, president of a gun rights advocacy group, says these kinds of careless mistakes violate a fundamental gun safety rule.
