DNR wants help with improving deer habitat

MARQUETTE, MI--   Private landowners in Baraga and Iron counties can learn about improving deer wintering habitat in their area at two meetings hosted by the DNR this month.

Severe winters over the past three years have decreased whitetail numbers.  Officials are concerned the condition of the deer’s wintering habitat—dense canopies of conifer trees, especially cedar and hemlock—has also declined.

Baraga and Iron counties contain some of the region’s deer wintering complexes, and to help improve conditions the DNR is asking for help from private landowners.

The first meeting takes place April 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ford Center in Alberta.  The second will be the following night from 6 to 8 at the Crystal Falls Township Hall.
