LANSING, MI (AP)-- State wildlife officials say they will allow for earlier supplemental deer feeding in the Upper Peninsula amid snow that's already deep.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says supplemental feeding on private land typically is allowed in early-to-mid January. This week, the department announced that supplemental feeding will be allowed across the U.P. starting December 15.
The DNR says a permit will be required.
DNR Wildlife Division chief Russ Mason says in a statement that "the snow in the U.P. just keeps coming" and temperatures are frigid.
Recreational feeding of wildlife is allowed on private land in the U.P. year-round, provided residents follow certain limits and other guidelines.
Last Saturday was opening day of firearm deer hunting season in Michigan.
