DNR seeking info on damage to GEMS memorial

upmatters.com

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, MI--   Officials are looking for the person responsible for damaging a memorial stone at a DNR Grouse Enhanced Management Site in southern Marquette County.

GEMS are unique ruffed grouse hunting areas that provide opportunities for a variety of hunters.

On September 9th the South Marquette County GEMS was dedicated to Bill Rollo, a DNR wildlife technician who was instrumental in creating that particular area along County Road 438.  A memorial stone was erected there, along with an informational kiosk.

On September 23rd DNR staff discovered the stone knocked off its pedestal.  The base of the memorial had been struck and was cracked, chipped, and moved from its original position.  A blue paint scrape and impact mark from black plastic or rubber were found on the monument.

The Forsyth Township Police Department and DNR officers are investigating the incident.  If it’s found to be a criminal act, the Ruffed Grouse Society is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the DNR at 906-228-6561 or Forsyth Township Police at 906-346-9224.
