DNR looking for deer habitat partners

MASS CITY, MI--   Private landowners interested in helping or improve Upper Peninsula deer wintering habitat can learn more at an upcoming DNR meeting next week.

The meeting will focus on private land ownership in northern Ontonagon, Houghton and Keweenaw counties.

Deer migrate each winter throughout most of the U.P. to deer wintering complexes – often called deer yards – containing dense canopies of conifers. The shelter reduces snow depth and allows deer to move over connected snow-packed trails. The past three severe winters and decline in deer numbers have raised concerns about habitat conditions in these complexes. To help improve conditions for deer, the DNR needs help from private landowners.

The meeting will be held Wednesday, July 20 from 6-8 p.m. at the Greenland Township Community Center in Mass City.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
