GRAND MARAIS, MI--   The U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies rescued a scuba diver that was in distress on a research vessel on Lake Superior.

Thursday around 4:50 p.m. the Coast Guard out of Sault Ste. Marie contacted the Alger County Sheriff’s Department to report a diver needed immediate medical attention on the David Boyd, which was about eight miles from Grand Marais.

Deputies dispatched a Valley Med Flight helicopter and the Coast Guard sent another helicopter from Traverse City, while rangers from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore sent a boat with medical personnel to meet up with the David Boyd.

The research vessel took the diver to Grand Marais.  The Valley Med Flight helicopter then transported the patient to Marquette General Hospital for additional treatment.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
