Dickinson County man killed by lawn mower

NORWAY TOWNSHIP, MI--   State Police from the Iron Mountain Post are investigating an accidental death in Norway Township.

Troopers responded Wednesday around 4:15 p.m. to a 911 call that a man was trapped underneath a riding lawn mower.

Officials say Melvin Miner, 71, was operating the mower at his home near the Menominee River when the machine slid off the river bank and flipped over.  Miner became trapped under the mower in about two feet of water.

Lifesaving measures were performed, but Miner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers were assisted by the Norway Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, the Department of Natural Resources, the Norway Fire Department, and North Alert.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
