Dickinson County bat research compromised

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

NORWAY, MI--   Conservation officers with the Department of Natural Resources are searching for the culprits who broke into a Dickinson County bat hibernation area and stole cameras.

The mine site is on private property near Norway. The DNR had been studying and test treating white nose syndrome, which kills little brown, northern long-eared, and big brown bats.

Between December 1 and March 23 one or more people broke through a metal gate and entered the mine. They took security cameras and signs and built a bonfire. Officials say the bats were disturbed, and their survival is critical to the recovery of their species.

Anyone with information regarding the break-in is asked to call the Report All Poaching hotline at 800-292-7800.
