LANSING, MI (AP)-- One of Michigan's largest state agencies says it will eliminate jobs to deal with a $7.5 million budget cut.
The Department of Human Services says it notified unions Thursday. Spokesman Bob Wheaton says the number of jobs won't be known for weeks.
He says it will depend on retirements, resignations and transfers to other jobs within the agency or elsewhere in state government.
The Department of Human Services has 11,400 employees. Wheaton says officials are trying to keep cuts away from field offices that have a direct role in offering state services.
Wheaton says the $7.5 million cut was approved by lawmakers earlier this year. He says DHS acknowledged a need to "get lean" and didn't strongly object.
