LANSING, MI (AP)-- Knives are prohibited in Michigan airports, but beginning next month the Transportation Security Administration says agents will still allow them through security checkpoints at the state's airports anyway.
TSA recently announced that travelers next month will be allowed to carry small folding knives on airplanes. Souvenir baseball bats, golf clubs and other sports equipment also will be permitted.
But a 2001 Michigan law prohibits knives with a blade of any length in the airport's secure area. Michigan's Attorney General Bill Schuette's office says the ban on knives will remain in effect despite the TSA changes.
TSA spokesman David Castelveter says agents will follow the new protocol and the changes will go into effect — even at Michigan airports.
