MARQUETTE, MI-- State regulators have released a draft of a modified wastewater discharge permit for the Eagle Mine's Humboldt Mill.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality in April issued the mill a national pollution discharge elimination system permit. It included a requirement for a hydrological study to determine the best location and discharge strategy to protect wetlands.
The DEQ says the mine recently submitted a request to modify its permit to establish a new outfall near the historic discharge from Humboldt pit into a wetland area.
In a statement Thursday, the DEQ says comments on the draft permit are due by August 3.
Production of nickel and copper began last fall at the mine on the Yellow Dog Plains.
