DEQ holding public hearing on mine permit renewal

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Eagle Mine in Marquette County is applying for the renewal of a water discharge permit for the Humboldt Mill.

It concerns the discharge of treated water from the mill’s water treatment plant to adjacent wetlands.

Renewal of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit is required every five years.  Mine officials say since the issuance of the original permit additional data has been collected.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is accepting public comment as part of the renewal process.  A hearing will be held Tuesday, January 13 at Westwood High School in Ishpeming beginning at 7 p.m.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
