DCHS trying to keep healthcare dollars local

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   Dickinson County Healthcare System is asking residents to stay local.

An asset purchase agreement with Bellin Health was recently terminated because DCHS reported significant unanticipated losses. Officials say fewer people are using the hospital, insurance reimbursements are decreasing, and competition is creating financial hardships.

While it continues to look for potential regional partners, DCHS says it’s in the process of creating an Internal Strengthening Plan. Officials say it will focus on creating financial stability, increasing patient volumes, and engaging the community. Part of that engagement includes asking residents to stay “Loyal to Local.” Officials say if healthcare dollars can’t be kept local, residents may have to drive out of town for care.

The hospital plans to hold a town hall-style meeting where residents can provide their input on the situation.
