Cordell to spend life in prison

MANISTIQUE, MI--   A suspect in the death of three Schoolcraft County residents whose bodies were found in a burned-out car has been sentenced.

Garry Cordell, 47, was given three sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole.  He had pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and one count of felony murder for the deaths of Jody Hutchinson, Carrie Nelson, and Heather Aldrich in April.

The victims’ families spoke at Thursday’s sentencing hearing.  They asked the judge to have no leniency.

Cordell said, “I’m proud of who I am and what I did and what I stand for.”

Judge William Carmody said while he doesn’t normally support the death sentence, if this case were in another state, he might.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
