Copper City man keeps police at bay for nearly 12 hours

COPPER CITY, MI--   A Houghton County man was arrested Thursday morning after a nearly 12-hour standoff with police.

Troopers from the Calumet Post were called to a residence on Gratiot Street in Copper City after the suspect threatened a public works employee Wednesday around 9:30 a.m.

The suspect was still barricaded in his home and making threatening statements toward police at 9 p.m. when the MSP Emergency Support Team was summoned.  Negotiations continued until the man surrendered and was taken into custody around 6:20 Thursday morning.  The suspect’s name is being withheld, pending arraignment.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, Mercy Ambulance, and American Red Cross assisted at the scene.
