Cookies keep missing women alive

Michigan State Police

LUCE COUNTY, MI--   Girl Scout Cookies are more than just good-tasting; they’re life-saving.

Sisters Leslie Roy and Lee Wright were missing for nearly two weeks after they left family in West Ishpeming April 11 and failed to show at their Mackinaw City hotel.  A State Police helicopter was flying over Northern Luce County Friday when the pilot noticed a reflection from the windshield of the women’s Ford Explorer, which was stuck in snow on a remote road about three miles from the Crisp Point Lighthouse.  Roy and Wright were in good condition.

Police say the women survived for 13 days by eating eight boxes of Girl Scout cookies they’d bought from a family member and a bag of cheese puffs.  They melted snow for drinking water, and wore several layers of clothes at night when the vehicle lost power.

Officials say there is no cellphone service in the area where Roy and Wright were found.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
