Competency exam ordered for triple homicide suspect

MANISTIQUE, MI--   One of the suspects in a Schoolcraft County triple homicide will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he’s competent for court proceedings.

The exam for Garry Cordell, 46, was granted apparently because of his history of depression and other possible mental health conditions.

Cordell’s codefendant, Kenneth Brunke, was also granted a psychiatric evaluation.

The third codefendant, Marietta Carlson, died while in custody this past June.

Cordell is charged with three counts of open murder, three counts of conspiracy to commit murder, and three counts of unlawful imprisonment in connection with the April deaths of Jody Hutchinson, Heather Aldrich, and Carrie Nelson.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
