Companies trying to restore power to U.P. customers

MARQUETTE, MI--   Utilities across the Upper Peninsula continue efforts to restore electricity to residents after hurricane-force winds ripped through the region Tuesday.

Gusts of up to 60 to 70 miles per hour knocked down trees, power poles, and other high-profile structures, and hampered the abilities of crews to get to downed lines.

As of noon Wednesday, Upper Peninsula Power Company reported about 1,200 outages. Cloverland Electric Cooperative had about 483 outages. The Alger-Delta Electric Cooperative was dealing with 3,500 outages in its region. WE Energies had fewer than 100 outages. And the Marquette Board of Light and Power had around 120 outages.

Officials urge residents to stay away from downed power lines, and to consider every line energized.
