UP communities receive water grants

MARQUETTE, MI--   Two Upper Peninsula townships will benefit from state water system grants.

The money comes through the Department of Environmental Quality’s Source Water Protection Grant Program. Powell Township is getting $4,400 and Republic Township $4,850.

The grants will be used to define the area contributing water to their wells; identify potential contaminants within the area—such as underground storage tanks; and implement management strategies and educational activities to protect their water supply.

The grants are part of nearly $400,000 awarded to communities across Michigan.
