Coast Guard breaking channels in northern Lake Michigan

MILWAUKEE, WI--   The U.S. Coast Guard continues to break ice in the Bay of Green Bay.

During Operation Taconite ice breaking transits will increase in frequency the first three weeks of this month. Tracks will be established and maintained from Rock Island Passage to the Fox River, to include Marinette/Menominee and Sturgeon Bay.

The Coast Guard recommends all recreational ice users plan their activities carefully, dress appropriately, use caution on the ice, and stay away from shipping channels.

Operation Taconite is the Coast Guard’s largest domestic ice-breaking operation, encompassing Lake Superior, the St. Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac, Georgian Bay, and all of Lake Michigan.
