Clean Snowmobile Challenge being held at Tech

HOUGHTON, MI--   This week marks the 19th annual SAE International Clean Snowmobile Challenge at Michigan Technological University.

The Keweenaw Research Center is hosting 23 teams to compete for the cleanest, quietest snowmobile. Engineering students from across the Northern U.S. and Canada are challenged to surpass 2006 emissions and noise standards. The two categories in the competition are internal combustion—gasoline and diesel utility.

The competition started Monday and ends Saturday. The main event Tuesday is a 100-mile endurance run from the Keweenaw Research Center to Copper Harbor. The rest of the week includes emissions tests, handling tests, noise measurements, and pulling contests.

A banquet will be held Saturday night, when teams will find out how they scored.
