City of Negaunee failed to uphold Open Meetings Act, judge rules

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Marquette County judge says officials with the City of Negaunee have violated the Open Meetings Act.

Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Mazzuchi issued the ruling Monday.  It stems from a January 9 meeting in which the city council and mayor had resident Kim Klein removed by police.  Klein had apparently been criticizing city manager Jeffrey Thornton and said the city failed to properly investigate his background before hiring him.

Mazzuchi did not order an injunction because there was not enough evidence of systematic violations by the city of the Open Meetings Act.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
