Casperson sponsors bill to rename part of Dickinson County highway

LANSING, MI--   A bill sponsored by State Senator Tom Casperson would designate part of US-8 in Dickinson County as the Medio J. Bacco Memorial Highway.

Bacco was a pioneer in concrete highway paving and road building in Michigan. Casperson says it’s about honoring a man who exemplified the hardworking spirit of the U.P.

Former Representative Ed McBroom testified in front of the Senate Transportation Committee last week. He said US-8 was not only Bacco’s first paving project—it was the first section of paved highway in the U.P.

Bacco went on to found Bacco, Inc., which is still operating in Iron Mountain. He helped finance two churches in the city, served on the Iron Mountain School Board, and established a scholarship for Michigan Technological University.

The designation would include the portion of US-8 from the Wisconsin border to the intersection with US-2 in the City of Norway.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
