Carts now an option for garbage pickup in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI--   The City of Marquette is offering residents a choice for their garbage and recycling pickup.

City Manager Mike Angeli says carts are now available as an option instead of green city bags. The standard cart package includes a 64-gallon garbage cart and 96-gallon recycling cart.

Angeli says residents can stay with the bag system, which will be about $14 a month on their utility bill, plus the cost of bags. He says the cart system could end up being less expensive for many residents.

“The cart system is about $19 a month and you do not have to purchase the bags. So depending on how many bags you might use, it might actually be cheaper to go the cart route.”

Angeli says the city has sent customers a form to fill out if they want something other than the current bag system. For those who’d like to switch, the form contains a number of different options regarding the number of bins they want for recycling and garbage.

Angeli doesn’t anticipate the new system will come into full operation until the first of the year. The city has to wait for the resident selection process to finish so it can order the proper number of bins.
