Car hits man in Iron County

CRYSTAL FALLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A pedestrian is lucky to be alive after he was hit by a vehicle in Iron County’s Crystal Falls Township.

Sheriff’s deputies say Sunday around 10 p.m. Jamie Metheringham was westbound on US-2 near Takala Road when he saw what he thought to be a deer in the road.  Metheringham slowed, realized it was a person, and swerved.

The pedestrian, John Leppiaho, was hit by the driver’s side front and mirror.  He was taken to Northstar Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.  Officials believe Leppiaho had a medical condition that caused him to step into traffic.

No citations were issued in the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
