Kingsford Public Safety says the 9-year-old was playing outside on the 1700 block of Sherman Street around 9:30 a.m. when he saw the smoke. He told his grandmother, who called 911.

Firefighters found the elderly homeowner unconscious in his bedroom. He was taken to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital for observation.

Officers say the fire started in and was confined to the attic area. The scene was cleared by 11 a.m.
