MARQUETTE, MI-- The Marquette Board of Light and Power has voted to approve a plan for the new Marquette Energy Center.
The $65 million project entails the installation of three large internal combustion engines that will run primarily on natural gas. If needed, light or heavy fuel oils could be used as a back-up.
The center would be constructed behind the BLP building.
The plan includes a 30-percent rate hike next year. For the typical resident that means an $18 increase on their monthly bill.
BLP officials say current generators are about 38 years old. He says the area needs a more reliable method of power generation.
The BLP Board will send the plan to Marquette mayor Mike Coyne, who will schedule a meeting between the board and the City Commission, which has final approval in the matter.
