Big Bay hit-and-run trial underway

MARQUETTE, MI--   Trial has begun for a Big Bay man charged in the hit-and-run death of NMU employee Robin Rahoi last December.

Michael Nelson, 46, allegedly struck Rahoi as she was walking on Lighthouse Road after a Christmas party in the early morning hours of December 17.  He’s charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident when at fault, resulting in death, punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

The prosecution and defense delivered their opening statements Monday, followed by some testimony from police and witnesses.  Testimony is expected to continue Tuesday.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
