Battle Creek man killed in Chippewa County snowmobile crash

BAY MILLS, MI--   Officials are reporting another snowmobile fatality in the U.P.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office say it happened Tuesday around 4:53 p.m. on Plantation Road near Bay Mills.  A group of eastbound snowmobiles was traveling single file on the right-hand side of the road, but one sled was in the oncoming lane as the group crested a hill.  They encountered a westbound pickup truck coming up the other side of the hill.

The driver of the snowmobile in the truck’s lane, Louis Charles Monaweck, 61, of Battle Creek, swerved to miss the pickup and hit a snow bank.  He was ejected from the machine and run over by the truck.

Officers from the Bay Mills Police Department responded to the scene, along with an accident investigator from the Michigan State Police and Bay Mills Fire Emergency personnel.

Officials say there is no evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the truck driver.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
