Alfred Saario sentenced

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   An Iron County man found guilty of shooting and killing his stepdaughter last year has been sentenced. 

Alfred Saario, 66, of Alpha tried to take his own life with the same firearm, but failed. He was convicted by a jury in August of second-degree murder and discharging a firearm indoors resulting in death.

Jamie Lee James, 29, was killed in the incident.

Saario was sentenced Thursday in Iron County Circuit Court to 25 to 40 years in prison.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
