About 1.2M from Michigan to travel for Memorial Day

LANSING, MI (AP)--   AAA says nearly 1.2 million people from Michigan are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The auto club says Thursday that's a nearly 2 percent increase from the just over 1.1 million who traveled last year.

AAA says it's the highest Michigan travel volume for the holiday period in nine years. More than a million travelers from Michigan will be driving to their destinations while nearly 60,000 will travel by air. The remaining travelers will go by train, bus or boat.

AAA says relatively low gas prices are encouraging people to travel. AAA Michigan says that should help boost summer tourist destinations around the state.

The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as May 26-30.
