1930s-era newsreel highlights challenges of Michigan winter

MDOT YouTube channel

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   A 1930s-era newsreel from the Michigan State Highway Department has surfaced in Upper Michigan, offering a reminder of the challenges and fun of winters past.

The Mining Journal reports that the black-and-white film is called "Winter Comes to Michigan." It was produced by the precursor agency to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

It was one of several reels found by sisters Nancy and Barbara Sleeper of Newberry in their mother's basement. They donated the reels to the transportation department. They have since been digitized, restored and uploaded to the department's YouTube channel.

The film shows residents enjoying winter at locations such as Ishpeming's Suicide Hill ski jump, early downhill ski areas, outdoor public ice skating rinks and a toboggan run.
