100 millionth driver crosses Soo bridge

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie celebrated its 100 millionth crossing Thursday.

The lucky driver crossed the span between Michigan and Ontario, Canada just after 9 a.m. The International Bridge Authority recognized one crosser from each direction. Both received a gift package including a tote bag and a tour of the bridge arches.

The bridge opened to traffic in 1962 and reached its 10 millionth crossing in 1975. It’s the largest international trade crossing in Northwestern Ontario. Since the Soo crossing is near the Trans-Canada Highway, it is a convenient route for goods going by truck from Northeastern and Eastern Ontario—as well as Northern Quebec and the Montreal area—to the Upper Great Lakes.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
